2 Guys Fantasy – Week 3: 2 Guys 2 WatchBy Frank on September 19, 2012
Evan’s Week 3 Spotlight
The Guy I Like: Brandon LaFell, Carolina Panthers
What a wild couple weeks it has been for the New York Giants defense. In Week One, a depleted secondary got burnt by Tony Romo and a previously unheard of Kevin Ogletree. In Week Two, the G-Men’s corners were abused by Vincent Jackson and Mike Williams of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and it took a heroic effort from Eli Manning to preserve a win for Big Blue. In Week Three, New York travels to Carolina and has to put up with Cam Newton on Thursday night.
Newton is a threat as both a runner and a thrower, but you have to figure he will be looking to take advantage of a weak secondary in this match-up. Expect the Giants to give lots of safety help to whichever corner gets stuck covering Steve Smith which means that Brandon LaFell should have a great opportunity to shine. LaFell has averaged 6.5 targets per game through the first 2 weeks and expect that number to grow on Thursday. I see LaFell finding the endzone at least once while surpassing 90 yards receiving. He is a must-start if you have him on your roster.
I Guy I Do Not Like: Percy Harvin, Minnesota Vikings
This honor could have just as easily been bestowed upon Adrian Peterson this week as Minnesota has the misfortune of traveling to San Francisco to match up against the physical 49ers defense in Week Three. One of the few things that seems to be certain early in the 2012 season is that the 49ers defense is for real. Led by their leader, Patrick Willis, the 49ers have made two of the NFL’s best offenses, the Packers and the Lions, look ordinary during the first two weeks.
The less-talented Vikings are not going to have a lot of fun trying to move the ball on Sunday and I see Harvin, who has suffered from migraine problems throughout his career, taking a big hit early and then becoming a shell of himself for the remainder of the contest. Expect him to have 10 or so touches but not surpass 50 yards for the game.
Frank’s Week 3 Spotlight
The Guy I Like: Brandon Pettigrew, Detroit Lions
I really like Pettigrew this week. He’s going up against an 0 – 2 Titans who have allowed 5 touchdowns to Tight Ends in the first two games of the season. Not to mention the Titans will be focused on not getting beat down the field by Megatron and that will leave plenty of room underneath for Pettigrew to operate.
With that scenario in mind I like Pettigrew to roam freely in the soft underbelly of the Titans defense to the tune of 80 yards and at least one score, with a strong possibility for a second.
I Guy I Do Not Like: Danny Amendola, St. Louis Rams
Coming off of a 15 catch, 160 yard performance against the Redskins you’re probably wondering why Amendola is on the is list. It’s quite simple really. If you watched Sunday’s game that the Rams played against the Redskins you’ll notice that Washington played a very soft zone coverage which allowed Amendola to work at his own leisure.
This week the Rams travel to the Bears where the underneath zones won’t be so open as the Bears patented Cover 2 look provides more bodies and more attention to underneath routes. Amendola may get 7 or 8 catches but don’t expect more than 65 yards receiving in the end.
